Overview
Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’, commonly known as Trident Java Fern, is a distinctive cultivar of Java Fern featuring slender leaves with forked (trident‑shaped) tips. This compact variant typically reaches 15–20 cm and is suitable for both small and large tanks as a textured midground or background plant.
Key Characteristics
- Forked, pinnate leaf tips with 2–5 narrow lobes per leaf, lending it a delicate, feathery appearance
- Slow-growing and hardy, making it ideal for beginners and low-tech setups
- Compact size: 15–20 cm in height, forming dense clumps over time.
Ideal Conditions
- Lighting: Low to moderate—0.5 W/L typical; moderate light enhances detail without promoting algae growth
- CO₂: Optional. Adequate growth can be achieved without injection; CO₂ improves leaf density and speed
- Water Parameters: Temp 20–28 °C; pH 5.0–7.5; GH/KH moderate; highly tolerant of fluctuations
Planting & Care
- Epiphytic plant: attach to driftwood or rocks using thread or plant glue—do not bury the rhizome to avoid rot
- Trim older leaves near the rhizome; new plantlets form along leaf tips and can be separated and relocated
- Occasional liquid fertiliser supports optimal growth; thrives even in nutrient-poor setups
Why Choose Trident Java Fern?
- Unique visual texture adds sculptural interest to aquascapes
- Extremely forgiving plant—low maintenance yet visually striking
- Tiny footprint and slow growth prevent overgrowth in mature tanks
- Suitable for nano tanks as well as larger community or shrimp setups
